The (very outdated and proven marketing scheme) adage used to be that you should spend at least 2 months' salary on the engagement ring. In my humble opinion, which is RIDICULOUS, and dare I say, BONKERS.

A lot of everyday folks live paycheck to paycheck, even those considered to be middle class. Depending on how much you make, 2 months' salary can buy a lot of things that one would NEED for basic survival more than a shiny piece of jewelry.

I personally don’t believe that you need to spend an outrageous amount of money on a symbol of your love, but I do GET that it’s a standard that’s been ingrained in society as a whole. And some people show their love by gifting, so while it may not be for me, or maybe you, it’s a symbolic act that probably won't die out anytime soon.

To each their own, but don’t bankrupt yourself in order to show your undying affection for your partner. Yeah, maybe my $200 engagement ring didn’t add significant weight to my hand, or blind passersby on a sunny day, but it made me more than happy and proud to wear it before marrying my husband.

Instead, maybe live vicariously through engaged celebrities, those who have more money than they can ever go through in a lifetime. I mean really, that’s the most frugal and entertaining way to go about it, and we have quite the list for you to peruse.
